Local Area Information
Dallas, located 18 km north from Melbourne's CBD, has a large Turkish population and a large of ethnic food and shopping options that reflects this.
Prior to the construction of the suburb the Dallas area was primarily used for agriculture. In 1924 the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works built a reservoir for reticulating water for the Broadmeadows area.
Dallas was named after the Governor of Victoria Sir Dallas Brooks. The Housing Commission of Victoria built many of the houses in the Dallas area between 1961 and 1970.
Now there is a range of shops including the Dallas Shopping Centre, and community and faith centres such as the Broadmeadows Mosque.
There are a number of takeaway stores in the Dallas shopping strip including kebab stores, Indian, and charcoal chicken, as well as the Coolaroo Hotel on Barry Road.
