Preston is home to a vibrant multicultural population, located 9 km north from Melbourne's central business district. Getting there and around is easy with tram, train and extensive bus services.
In Preston you can find both the Northland Shopping Centre – a major retail mall, and the Preston Market, selling fresh produce. High Street also hosts numerous retail and food stores.
Multicultural communities are well supported in Preston by the Darebin Intercultural Centre. The Centre now has a fantastic Community Kitchen space, newly carpeted meeting rooms, space for art exhibitions and soon to be installed conference style facilities including, Wi-Fi, data projectors and screens. The centre is used to deliver seminars and conferences on issues related to inter-culturalism, film nights aimed to increase cross-cultural understanding, diversity training and English conversation classes with locals.
Migrants are further supported by the Preston Library, where a range of products and services are available for those from a non-English speaking background. Computer access is available to members free of charge, including internet and Microsoft Office programs.
For outdoor activities there are a number of parks and reserves in Preston, including the A.G. Davis Park which has play equipment suitable for a variety of ages and abilities, picnic and BBQ facilities. The W.R. Ruthven V.C. Reserve has a newly build rocket themed playground, as well as football, cricket and tennis facilities and a long jump pit.
